How to Use This Data
Here is more information about the columns in the table above:
- Popularity
- This is a percentage scale (0: not popular, 100: very popular). Popularity is a measure of how popular this niche is with other bloggers and YouTubers. For example many people write blogs about weight loss or making money online. Comparatively few people write blogs about horse racing or goal setting. Generally speaking more popular niches have more competition, although this tends to be from other bloggers. It doesn't necessarily show how competitive the search results are for a particular niche because the search results could be dominated by major players. For example in shopping niches there may be less blogs but you'll be up against Amazon, eBay and etsy. Some niches also have few bloggers but competition from business is intense - water coolers being one such example.
- Competition
- This is on a percentage scale (0: no competition, 100: very competitive). This is a more general measure of how competitive a niche is. However, bear in mind that this data is more heavily biased towards competition in search results for web pages. It can be easier to get traffic on YouTube in more competitive niches, but it will still be a hard slog in competitive niches.
- Potential
- A niche's overall potential is rated on a percentage scale. Be aware that this scale is the inverse of the previous two, i.e. 0 is the lowest potential and 100 is for niches with the most potential. Niche potential is assessed by five different factors, two of which are popularity and potential. The other three factors are exclusively used to measure YouTube channel metrics.
What Are Good YouTube Niches?
I spent a lot of time blogging in 2009 - 2012. I used to blog in some difficult niches (business software, accountancy) and one much easier niche - relationships/dating. Although my accountancy blog received very high value clicks on CPC (cost per click) adverts, I hardly received any visitors to my blog. It was also pretty difficult writing the articles, especially as I'm not a trained accountant!
By contrast my dating blogs displayed advertising that lead to much lower CPC values per click. However, the sites received at least 10x as much traffic as my accountancy blog, and it was much easier to write the articles. In the end I decided to continue with my dating advice blogs and I let the accountancy website domain expire.
In general good YouTube niches are the same as good blogging niches - you want topics where it is easy to get traffic (viewers) and hence rack up those subscribers and watch hours.
You can use the tools on this website to discover good YouTube niches. These general observations might help:
- In general, people in Western countries generally use YouTube for entertainment. Large corporations might dominate the website search results these days, but the largest and most successful YouTube channels are primarily run by individuals. True story: my anime doll has more subscribers to her channel than my old company channel has.
- Stay away from "corporate" niches dominated by big businesses. These are increasingly regulated online so you may find you lose all your traffic overnight. Example niches: health, accountancy, law.
- Hobbies and interests are very good topic for a YouTube channel. Choose something you're passionate about, because it's hard work making videos. So you definitely want to be making films about something you enjoy.
- Tutorials can do very well. I have a tech channel and whenever I get a problem with my PC I try to upload a video about it. Any topic where problems arise is suitable for making tutorials. Tutorials tend to be evergreen too, and with pretty decent watch time.
- Try to choose a niche where you can create original content (OC), and without resorting to AI voices or images. This will make it much more likely that your channel will be eligible for monetization.
- Choose a niche where you have easy access to what you're actually going to be making videos about. For example you might read that Smart Dolls are a great niche to make videos about (they are!). However, unless you actually own one (like I do: here's my doll's channel) then you'll be at a huge disadvantage.
- Some niches are very hot in 2024 and one that keeps catching my eye is storytelling. This is another niche where you can really rack up those watch minutes. Good storytellers also attract very loyal audiences.
- Live streaming is my third tip for getting your watch hours up. You don't even need that many people to be watching you live to rack up those watch hours. Just 22 viewers watching you for an hour every other week would give you 572 hours watch time a year - nearly 15% of the total you need to get your channel monetized!
- From 2018 onwards the mood changed online and cancel culture became much more of a thing. There was always a risk of getting your channel demonetized or completely de-platformed, but these risks have now intensified. For this reason it's best to stay away from contentious issues (e.g. politics), stay away from being critical about anyone and anything and just be aware that free speech no longer exists online.
- A big trend that began in 2023 is the increasing numbers of viewers watching YouTube on their big screen TV. These viewers tend to prefer longer, more engaging content. They hate rapid editing and fast moving subtitles. Save that editing style for TikTok.
