Which Types of YouTube Channels Receive the Most Views?
If you look at the list above then you'll see that most of the channels listed in the entertainment sector. Some businesses do well on YouTube but it primarily remains a platform for entertainment.
In general the YouTube channels with the highest total number of video views seem to have broad appeal. Very few specialised niche channels appear in this list. For example, two channels that have appeared in this list are Vikkstar123 and Mr Beast's Gaming channel. Both gaming streamers cover a variety of titles rather than being dedicated streamers of games such as GTA or Call of Duty.
There are also a number of family life channels appearing in this list. Again the majority of these have a very broad appeal and they cover a wide range of topics.
Music channels are also quite a common sight in this list of the most viewed YouTube channels. Music is always popular on YouTube but to appear in the list of the most viewed channels you generally have to be a well known artist like Rita Ora or kesha.
Another type of channel that receives a lot of views are channels aimed at kids. Toddlers especially don't mind watching the same video over and over again so this probably helps to explain why Peppa Pig's channel is one of the most viewed on YouTube. Just bear in mind that if you produce videos for kids on YouTube your earnings may not be as high as other channels due to monetization issues.
How to Get More YouTube Channel Views
Here are some tips on how to grow your own channel so you may some day appear in this list:
- If you don't yet have a channel or want to create a new channel then use our YouTube Niche Ideas Finder to uncover niches where it will probably be much easier to rank videos for and therefore get plenty of views. The list of easier niches is regularly updated so be sure to bookmark the page.
- Keep producing regular content. Set a target for video output that you'll stick to. For example you could plan to release one video per week.
- Make some amazing content that people will play several times. Personally I think music is the best niche for this as there are many music videos I've played at least a dozen times.
- Produce better quality thumbnails. I've personally improved my view count on YouTube by using Canva to create high quality thumbnails. By the way, make sure that the image on your thumbnail exactly matches the content in your video, or you will receive more Dislikes.
- Look in the YouTube Creator Studio reports for clues about what content viewers like, and make much more of it. The 20/80 rule is useful here - you'll generally find that 80% of your views come from just 20% of the videos you've uploaded.
- Use Cards and End Screens to retain viewers once they've finished watching a video in your channel. Once your channel is doing reasonably well, researching viewer retention could be extremely worthwhile.
- Use our YouTube Channel Ideas Generator. Simply paste your channel ID into our free tool and it will show you a list of topics you could also make videos about. Just make sure you don't veer off into a completely different topic. I always recommend you keep your channel to a single topic, unless you're one of the broader interests channels as listed above.
- Create playlists of video topics. For example on my lifestyle channel I have a play list for unboxings, and another for dress ups.
- Spend more time creating more interesting titles for your videos. Keyword research can also help here. Again the YouTube Channel Ideas Generator can assist with finding keywords of relevance to your channel.
- Take time to write a good description for each video. Again, ensure you use plenty of keywords relating to your video.
- Reach out to other YouTubers in your niche and see if you can post a guest video on their channel. They may also agree to posting a video in your channel. This way both channels gain subscribers. I have seen this a few times in the clothing unboxing niche.
- Posting videos on social media can work very well. Remember to also post your videos on your blog (if you have one).
- How to and tutorial videos can get a significant amount of traffic from Google Search if they decide to feature it alongside search results for blogs and other websites.
- If you've made an amazing video then reach out to influencers to see if they will feature your video in their own content.
- Don't rush things. It does take time to grow a channel and make sure you do it organically without taking dubious shortcuts like buying subscribers or views.
