As I said previously, I watch a lot of gaming content. Here are my top tips for gaining traction on YouTube:
- The overwhelming number of successful gaming channels operate in a narrow niche. While some gamers such as BrokenMachine play a combination of Battlefield (various versions) and Warzone, gamers typically find more success when they focus exclusively on a single game. For example Marleythirteen only covers Call of Duty and Warzone.
- Covering a narrow niche can really help to grow your channel (and not just in gaming). If you're a big personality and you have already had some success on the platform then you could expand into different games (like TimTheTatman). I still don't consider this to be a good approach - I had a phase of watching Tim's channel when he covered Warzone and Fortnite, but I wasn't interested in his other content.
- Personally I overwhelmingly prefer videos where the creator is chatty. Tell the audience what you're doing, and why.
- Short form content (i.e. Shorts) are a great way to find new audiences for your longer content. If you have amazing kills, or something sensational happens in a game you're playing, then consider turning it into a Short.
- Be sure to record good quality video and audio. It's worth spending an afternoon setting up these to be a good as your current hardware setup allows.
- Engagement is the key to success on Youtube. Once you have a enough views to get some engagement data, check to see what percentage of your audience stop watching the video in the first 30 seconds. If you have a steep drop-off then you need to work on your intros. One of the best suggestions is to get straight into the action.
